Home Tip #3 -Garbage Disposal Cleaning

To clean your garbage disposal, first use your stopper to fill the sink with 2-4 inches of hot soapy water.  Pull the plug and turn on the garbage disposal, allowing the water to flush through.  Next, fill the garbage disposal with two cups of ice and a cup of rock salt.   Run cold water and turn on the garbage disposal for approximately 5-10 seconds.  The combination of ice and rock salt will help dislodge sludge and debris off of the grinding elements so that they can make their way down the drain while sharpening the blades. If you don’t happen to have rock salt, make some white vinegar ice cubes.  This too will work, and it helps remove unwanted odors as well.  If vinegar is not your desired disinfectant small, than try a citrus fruit, orange, lemon, grapefruit, or  a lime.  The citric acid in the peels will clean the blades as well as eliminate odors.
